Please be aware that this formula was developed in 1973 and it has some issues. CKD-EPI or MDRD are preferred calculation methods.
- This was a time when obesity was less common (higher weight may mean greater fat mass)
- It is not adjusted for body surface area. Adjusting for body surface area increases the accuracy, especially among those with reduced renal function. Normal body surface area is 1.73m2.
- It was developed before creatinine assays became standardised resulting in this equation overestimating creatinine clearance by 10 to 40%
